About District Torghar
Torghar (The Black Mountain) which is also known as Kala Dhaka in Hindko language, is a mountainous range and is one of newly declared 25th District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On 27th January 2011, president of Pakistan, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, approved the notification and declared Torghar as a District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The area now belonging to Torghar District was a part of Mansehra District which was named as Kala Dhaka. The word "Kala Dhaka" is the combination of Hindko dialect two words Kala and Dhaka. Kala means black and Dhaka means mountain. This area was famous for its thick and congested Forests. After Pakistan came into being this district partial area remained under the Amb state and partially under the Wali Swat state. Torghar District established in February, 2011 and before the creation it was administered by the PATA of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The district is lying between 34° 19' 29'' to 34° 46' 8'' North latitudes and 72° 43' 2'' to 72° 56' 24'' East longitudes. It is located in Eastern part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The total area of the district is 454 square kilometers.
The district is bounded on the North-East by Battagram, Mansehra on the South, Buner on the West, Shangla on the North-West and Swabi District on the South-West.
Out of all the 25 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Torghar District ranks 25th in terms of population size and average annual growth rate.
The Black Mountain itself has a total length of 65 to 70 miles and an average height of 8,000 ft. It rises from the Indus Abasin near the village of kiara upto its watershed by bruddur, hence it runs North West by North to the point on the crest known as chittabut. From chittabut the range runs due North, finally descending by two large spurs to the Indus again.The only road that traverses Kala Dhaka from Darband to Thakot is 84 kilometers long. This road connects the area with the outer world.
The Black Mountain's (Torghar) belong to Isazai and Malazai clans of the Yousafzai tribes. Isazai sub clan is further divided into three sub clans' i.e Mada Khail, Hassanzai and Akazai. Malazai sub clan is divided into two sub clans ie Bassi Khail and Nusrat Khail. Bassi Khail is the largest group consisting of 37% of the population of Torghar (Black Mountain) while Nusrat Khail and Akazai constitution 12% each and the population of Hassanzai & Mada Khail is 18.5% and 20% respectively. Bassi Khail, Nusrat Khail and Akazai are inhabitants of the left bank of Indus while the mada khail tribe resides on the right side and Hassanzai area is situated on both the sides of Indus River.
